The numbers
The UK register holds 53,476 active plumbing and heating companies. 11,279 have incorporated since January 2025, roughly 675 a month through 2026, and 22% of the January 2025 intake was dissolved within 18 months, one of the tougher survival rates in the trades.
Word of mouth is too slow for a burst pipe
Plumbing has a split personality that most trades do not. Planned work, the bathroom refit, the boiler swap, still travels on recommendations. But a huge share of the trade is emergency work, and emergencies do not wait for word of mouth. At 11pm with water coming through the ceiling, nobody texts three mates for a recommendation. They search “emergency plumber near me”, or ask their phone’s assistant, and they call whoever looks real, close and awake.
That moment is decided by findability alone: does your business appear, does it say emergency call-outs and the areas covered, are the reviews visible, is the number one tap away. The firms that win the panic calls are not the best plumbers in the postcode. They are the findable ones. And increasingly the assistant answering that panicked question is an AI, which can only recommend businesses whose websites it can actually read.
What the survivors do
The plumbing firms still trading past the cliff run both engines: reputation for the planned work, and a machine-readable, emergency-clear website for the moment someone they have never met needs them immediately. State the emergency line, the hours, the patch, the certifications, and let the reviews sit where a stranger, or an AI, can check them in ten seconds.
