What does SEO actually cost in the UK? The published numbers, collected

Part of Mode’s research series. Every figure below is published and attributed; where the industry hides its numbers, we say so rather than invent them.

The numbers that are actually public

SEO pricing is one of the most quote-gated corners of UK marketing, so here is what exists on the record. The UK’s largest independent agency benchmark, BenchPress 2026 (The Wow Company), puts the average blended hourly rate for smaller agencies at £104 per hour and £122 for larger ones, with senior tiers higher. That hourly economics is what sits under most unpublished SEO quotes.

Published retainers are rarer, but they exist: at capture in June 2026, one London agency we monitor published local SEO management from £500 a month and broader monthly support at £750, with published SEO audits from £397; another published PPC-and-SEO retainers running from £750 to £4,500 a month. Larger-agency engagements reach several thousand pounds monthly. The spread is real, and it reflects scope, seniority and how much content and authority work is inside.

How to read a quote when there’s no price list

When the number finally arrives, judge it on four things: defined monthly deliverables (pages optimised, content produced, technical fixes shipped, not “ongoing optimisation”); who does the work (senior hands or a delegation chain); outcome reporting (enquiries and revenue movement, not activity screenshots); and exit terms (rolling beats lock-in). And one hard rule: nobody can guarantee rankings. A guaranteed-page-one promise is the industry’s oldest red flag, now joined by its new cousin, the guaranteed AI citation.

The direction of travel

Worth knowing as you budget: rates fell in 2024 for the first time in the benchmark’s history before partially recovering in 2025, and search itself is shifting toward AI answers, which is changing what SEO money should buy: machine readability, structured data and citable substance, not just keywords. Ask any prospective provider what they would change about your site for AI search; the quality of that answer tells you plenty.
