Original research from the Companies House register, July 2026. Method at the bottom, every number checkable.
The numbers
The UK has 49,893 active registered cafes, with 18,555 incorporated since January 2025, almost 1,000 new cafes a month. Of the January 2025 openings, 22.1% were dissolved within 18 months. A fifth of new cafes gone before their second summer, in a trade where the margins were already famous for being thin.
The shopfront moved
A cafe used to be chosen from the pavement. Now it is chosen from a phone, usually before the customer is anywhere near the street: Google Maps for “coffee near me”, and increasingly an AI assistant for the fuzzier asks, “best brunch around here”, “somewhere quiet to work with good coffee”, “gluten-free cake nearby”.
Here is what most cafes have not clocked: the menu, the thing that wins those questions, is usually invisible to the machines answering them. It lives as a photo on Maps, a PDF, or an Instagram story. Machines cannot read any of those well. The AI recommending a brunch spot cites the cafe whose menu, hours and story exist as real, readable text. That cafe wins the customer who never saw the shopfront.
What the survivors do
Keep the Maps profile immaculate, photos and reviews and hours. Then give the machines the rest somewhere you own: a simple site with the menu as actual text, dietary notes, the story, the location. It is the least glamorous marketing in hospitality and it quietly decides who gets recommended.
Method, so you can check it
Counts pulled live from the Companies House register (Advanced Search API) on 12 July 2026 for SIC 56102, unlicensed restaurants and cafes. Scope note: licensed restaurants and takeaways sit under neighbouring codes, so the true eating-out field is larger; this piece describes cafes specifically. Public data; verify any figure.
